I grew up a pastor's kid living in a parsonage that happened to neighbor a horse boarding facility. The fascination with the horses was inevitable, so I struck up a friendship with the stable owner. In exchange for (a lot) of bartered hard work, I began lessons in 1990, culminating hunter/pace competitions.
College, marriage, career and two kids took me away from horses for more than ten years, until my husband suggested that he would watch our two young boys on Saturday mornings so I could begin to ride again–just to get some quiet time, if nothing else! Cut to two years later, and we had moved out of the suburbs, bought our horse farm and had an ever-expanding heard of wonderful horses (and a pony).
All these years removed from first peaking over my neighbor's fence just to get to look at her horses, I still feel alive around these beautiful animals. I'm eager to share what I have with others who feel the same way and I'm so glad to be of service to God and to this community.
Ever notice that every great ride turns into a story...and every great journey begins with one? In 2019, I had a miraculous encounter with God that changed my life forever. With my husband out of town, and eager to be helpful before his birthday weekend, I accidentally overturned our industrial-grade, zero-turn mower into our pond while mowing. I was STUCK underneath the mower – strapped in, upside-down, under water, with my head pinned beneath the roll bar!
Just when I was about to run out of breath, I prayed and said, "God, I am completely stuck, there is absolutely nothing I can do to get out of this mess and I'm going to die unless you physically come and save me." At that moment I felt someone's hands reach down into the pond and grab my head. They firmly turned my face, first downward, then through the mucky pond bottom and finally up on the other side of my body where my mouth was above water just enough for me to get a desperately needed breath of air. I quickly gathered myself and found the seatbelt release that would free me from the 1200 pounds of mower that I was trapped beneath. Once I was out, I looked around to see who had saved me...but there was no one there. No person had been there at all. Simply put, God had saved me.
After this experience, I had a real strong sense that there was more God wanted me to be doing. I started growing in my faith, hosting bible studies and meetup groups at my house for local kids, and I loved it (and by all reports, the kids and their families did too). That experience plus the fact that, after all these years, I now had a horse farm and four horses somehow started to come together in my spirit, and this vision started to become more clear. If you're being called to do something, it often starts right where you are with whatever fishes and loaves you have to offer. Perhaps this was His plan the whole time.
I posted a social media survey asking if there were families who would be intersted in a faith-based horse club for kids and more than eighty people responded as interested. So, in the fall of 2022 we started our inaugural term and filled up three different clubs, running the whole school year. That summer we had organized three camps (two equestrian camps and one "Man Camp" for boys specifically) that filled up entirely. That was confirmation enough, and our non-profit, Kingdom Reins, was born in late 2023. We've learned a lot, and will continue to. The program will grow and evolve, and we're excited to see how God uses it.
